Perineal massage is a technique used to help stretch the space between the front and back passage to improve outcomes during vaginal child birth.

How does it work?

  • Increases blood flow to prepare the area for stretching when the baby's head comes out.

  • Increased elasticity of the skin and muscles

Benefits:

  • Reduced need for episiotomy

  • Reduced risk of serious tearing (grade 3 and 4)

  • Reduced risk of perineal pain during and after birth

About perineal massage:

  • It is safe to complete from 34 weeks of pregnancy

  • Perform 1-2 times per week

  • Either complete yourself or with the help of your partner

  • Complete on the toilet, in the shower or bath or in bed with your hips propped with pillows

  • Use a natural lubricant such as olive and bee, coconut or olive oil.

  • A slight tingling or burning feeling is normally but severe pain is not. The sensation should reduce

  • Take deep breaths throughout to help your body relax

  • It should take between 5-10 minutes

Steps:

1.Empty your bladder

2.Clean your hands

3.Find a comfortable position

4.Apply a warm compress like a heat pack or clean face washer to the area to allow the tissue to relax

5.Use 1-2 fingers or your thumb with the lubricant. Insert to your vagina to about the depth of your nail

6.Press down towards your anus and hold for 30-60 seconds

7. Press to the sides towards each sitting bone and hold for 30-60 seconds

8.Finish by moving your fingers in a ‘U’ shape whilst applying outward and downward pressure
