Why you should use a foot stool to make pooing easy

Have you ever seen these signs in public toilets that shows you exactly how and how not to sit on the toilet seat?

why you should use a foot stool when pooing

Whilst the posture on the left isn’t the perfect or ideal position for emptying your bowels, it’s actually better than the right. Lets explain the nitty gritty on why.

There is a pelvic floor muscle called puborectalis. When broken down pubo= pubic bone and rectalis= rectum. This muscle is ‘u’ shaped and it connects from the inside of your pubic bone on the left, wraps around the back of the rectum and connects back to the pubic bone on the right. When this muscle is contracted it shortens. This causes the rectum to be pulled closer towards the pubic bone. Because of where this muscle sits along the length of the rectum, when it contracts it causes a kinking of the rectum. When the muscle is relaxed, it lengthens which causes the rectum to be pulled away from the pubic bone therefore unkinking the angle.

why using a foot stool helps with pooing from a pelvic health physio

When using a foot stool, it elevates your knees higher than your hips. Combined with leaning forwards, elbows on knees, belly breathing and a relaxed upper body this is the perfect combination to relax puborectalis. This will create a straight passageway for your poo to the toilet bowl.

This means less straining, less time on the toilet (ideally your poo should be done within 30 seconds- 2 minutes) and helps you to feel completely empty and avoid the need to go twice.

This over a period of time reduces your risk of prolapse, haemorrhoids, urinary urgency, urinary leakage, overactive bladder and other pelvic floor dysfunctions.

Using a foot stool when pooing can significantly enhance your bathroom experience by promoting better posture and encouraging natural bowel movements. Incorporating a foot stool is a simple yet effective adjustment that aligns well with the values of natural health and wellbeing, facilitating a more comfortable and efficient toilet routine.
